I’ve been experimenting with gouache (opaque watercolors) the past few years. Here is a little painting I made at ʻIao Valley State Monument in Maui. This is a sacred space and a state park, and in 1790, this was the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai, where Kamehameha I and his forces conquered the Maui army. (I first learned of ʻIao Valley when I saw Georgia O’Keefe’s waterfall paintings that she made here.)
